You’re perfect the way you are.

Hi friends! First off HAPPY MARCH!!!

Today I’m writing about something that I struggle with… This is something I’ve debated on blogging about for some time now. Brace yourself for the long post….

You all know I’m pretty new to having my own business and bettering myself as a photographer. That comes with a lot of goal setting, and sometimes comparing myself to other very very talented photographers and creatives. This is a good thing from time to time to help with inspiration and to get my mind working, but this is also a problem because I personally start tearing myself down. I’ve caught myself numerous times thinking, “Why am I even trying to pursue a job in this, _____ is so much better than me,” “I’ll never be able to have incredible images like _______,” and the list goes on. By no means am I trying to have a little pity party, I’m just trying to hit on some things that you may be saying to yourself!

I’m going to tell you this – IT IS NOT TRUE! You are perfect.

I just want to encourage you to stop comparing yourself and thinking you’re not good enough, or adequate to do your job or your hobby. Whether it’s that you think you’re failing in your career, you’re failing your family, or your own goals, I want to tell you that you’re not. The really tough reality is that you believe these things about yourself because one person may have tried to tear you down, and you convinced yourself they were correct. Another thing is that you may have had an idea that you weren’t good enough and you continued thinking it so you just started to believe it, (I’m guilty for this one). This is a problem I struggle with regularly, and a lot of people I know struggle with it too. I’ve been working on it, and it’s not easy but I’m trying and it’s good. I think it’s important to work on bettering yourself, sometimes you’ve just got to compare how much you’ve grown instead of just not thinking you’re so and so!! Our God is to good that he made you exactly how he wanted you, he didn’t make you to be like _______. He loves you, and if he wanted you to be like so and so, he would have done it.

YOU ARE ENOUGH. YOU ARE KILLIN’ IT IN WHAT YOU’RE DOING.

Even if you’re not the absolute best person who has ever done (insert career or title here) doesn’t mean you’re the worst. Just because you don’t get straight A’s or constant promotions doesn’t mean you suck. I’ll be the first one to tell you that. Chances are what you’re telling yourself isn’t the slightest bit true. (I’m like 99% sure).

I do this. I mentioned before that I think I’ll never be like some of the photographers I follow, or some of the people I follow on social media. But this is because I follow them on the Internet. I really love the comparison that the Instagram feeds and the Facebook photos are their highlight reel. I’m comparing my behind the scenes with everyone else’s highlight reel. Of course their life is going to look awesome and wonderful and I’m going to want to do some of the things they do, but that’s because I’m not getting the whole story! It may not just be the wonderful social media that you compare yourself to, it could be your best friend, or your family member, but I’ll bet they don’t actually have it all together like you think.

I’m comparing my behind the scenes with everyone else’s highlight reels.

If you compare yourself to others it’s never going to be enough. I need to be more confident in my work and just be thankful that I’ve improved this much in a year and that there’s still so much more room for improvement! Same goes for you, just because you’re not the best public speaker, making small talk, etc doesn’t mean you’re not good enough. Take a moment and reflect on how much you’ve grown! Here’s a few photos from then and some I’ve taken in the last month. So I’m thankful for this season of growth and for my clients who support me and cheer me on as I grow this business. But most of all, I’m thankful for a good good God who loves me when I can’t love myself.

I love this! It is SO hard to not fall into the trap of comparing yourself to the people around you, and social media makes it so much harder! This is a great reminder. Thank you!

Yes! As a new business owner, it’s easy to get discouraged when you see the way others are flourishing in their businesses. But like you said, you can’t compare someone else’s highlights to your behind the scenes! Love this. 😉

Aw thank you so much! 💞

This is amazing! I recently shot a couple the other day, and she saw the pictures which everyone thought were beautiful, and her first words were “I don’t like the way I look” My heart sank. I felt like I failed, but my brand is about about a positive body image, and these photos were all candids mind you. I just usually get that during the session and work my magic, not during delivery. I digress, I went into magic mode, and really explained to her that quite frankly thats the way she looks. And although you don’t like some of your features, this is purely who you are. You are only given one body, and you can do things to an extent to change it, but most things are there to stay. And it’s so important that us as photographers really push that messages in a world with body morphing and photoshopping. Even I as a male have a negative body image of myself at times, because my abs are taking a little bit longer to come in than my friends. We must remember that what we see is not always reality, and that we shouldn’t compare ourselves to others. We should work hard to embrace our quirks, and leverage them because they are the things that truly set us apart.

So true!! Thanks for sharing!! 💞
